PET Scanners are machines used at the hospital to look inside you without cutting you open. These little cylindrical tubes are called phantoms, they’re used to calibrate the scanner before you get inside. Our company wanted to create a reusable package for each phantom for two reasons. One, so that the folks running the scanner didn’t just have a ziplock bag full of phantoms and two, for branding! I created this sweet little box design that is laser cut from a single sheet of acrylic then snapped together. No glue, no tape, no nothing just snap fit, like really tight LEGOs. The package features two claws that are slightly smaller diameter than the phantom creating a flex and snap hold when you place the phantom in the box. The sliding lid is laser etched with the company name and gets progressively tighter as you push it in until it locks into the close position. One of my first designs as a real engineer and although its just a plastic box, I have to say its a pretty darn cool little box!
